ConSITer DA is a desk accessory to make life easier for folks using Auto UnStuffIt 1.00 by Ray Lau. StuffIt 1.40a, UnStuffIt 1.40, StuffIt Viewer DA 1.00, and UnStuffIt DA 1.00 do not recognize files converted to Auto UnStuffIt applications; although this will change in future releases, there are those without DiskTop, Disk Tools, or other such program or DA to make the necessary changes to the file type to “fake out” the other StuffIt tools.
Enter ConSITer DA.
ConSITer DA will Convert SIT files to Auto UnStuffIt and back again. It does this by simply changing the file type to APPL or SIT!, respectively. IT WILL NOT INSTALL THE AUTO UNSTUFFIT SHELL! This program is intended to make Auto UnStuffIt files accessable from the StuffIt programs and utilities, then change it back so it may be opened as an application.
What Version 1.01 DOES NOT DO:
(1) THIS DA DOES NOT MAKE A SIT FILE AN AUTO UNSTUFFIT FILE! The resources for Auto UnStuffIt (CODE, etc.) must already be there, or Lord only knows what will happen when you double-click it!
(2) This DA does not change the file creator; this means that the document cannot be double-clicked to enter StuffIt. This was done because Mr. Lau documents the ease of making the file type whatever you want; in order to preserve this, the file creator does not change. StuffIt, UnStuffIt, et al will still be able to work with the files anyhow.
(3) This DA does not remove nor add any resources. Only the file type is changed.
(4) This DA does not check for the existence of any resources in a SIT file before changing it to an Auto UnStuffIt file. This may be changed in a future release.
(5) This DA does not filter out other applications from the file menu when opening an Auto UnStuffIt file. This is again due to the fact that the file creator can be anything at all. The user must be aware of what’s what him/her/itself.
How to use ConSITer DA:
Just install the DA into your System file, or open it using Suitcase™ or Font/DA Juggler™ (I have tested it with the former, not the latter, but both should work). When it is selected, it presents its own menu on the menu bar. The menu has four items: the first, always dimmed, is the version number; the second is “Open SIT”; the third is “Open Auto UnStuffIt”; the fourth is “Quit”. “Open SIT” asks for the filename of a SIT file to change back to Auto UnStuffIt. “Open Auto UnStuffIt” asks for the filename of an application (remember, it’s up to you to know what’s an Auto UnStuffIt file and what’s not) to change to look like a SIT file. “Quit” removes the menu; the menu will also disappear when the current application is exited.
ConSITer DA works with MultiFinder.
